Oceania “Riviera” to Showcase Contemporary Latin American Arts
by Matt Hannafin
With Oceania Cruises’ second purpose-built ship, the 66,084-ton, 1,250-passenger Riviera, set to debut next month, the line has been dribbling out some previews about her interiors. The latest is that Riviera will feature more than 1,000 artworks by what the line calls “some of Latin America’s most accomplished and admired contemporary artists.”
Assembled by line founder Frank Del Rio as a nod to his Cuban heritage, the collection includes works by artists from Cuba’s 1927–1950 Vanguard Movement as well as works by contemporary Cuban artists such as Julio Larraz, Carlos Luna, Humberto Benitez, Manuel Mendive, and José Grillo. Works by French painter Pierre Boncompain, Mexican painter Luis Zesatti, Peruvian artist Daniela Wicki, and Catalonian Eduardo Arranz-Bravo are also featured. Several pieces were commission specifically for the ship, including “The Feast” by Miami artist Humberto Benitez (which will hang in La Reserve, which offers 7-course wine-pairing dinners for just a handful of guests) and two pieces by José Grillo: “Yellow Submarine,” which will be displayed outside Jacques Pepin’s onboard restaurant, and “El Caretas,” which will be displayed near the reception desk.
Riviera is due to be christened in Barcelona on May 11, then sail her 10-day maiden voyage from Venice to Piraeus/Athens on May 16, visiting Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, Monemvasia, Crete, Santorini, Kusadasi, Delos, and Mykonos.
