Carnival’s "Destiny" to Be Rebuilt into a Completely New Ship by Matt Hannafin What’s in a name? When she launched in 1996, the name Carnival Destiny represented a new, triumphalist naming convention for Carnival, which had theretofore favored halfway racy vessel names like Fantasy, Ecstasy, and Sensation. Destiny was followed by a slew of chest-thumping names, including Triumph, Victory, Conquest, Glory, Valor, Liberty, and Freedom. But times change. The Fun Ship line’s last two ships, Carnival Magic and Carnival Dream, could, for obvious reasons, be mistaken for Disney vessels if it weren’t for the fact that both vessels have “Carnival” for a first name. But there seems to be a new wind blowing at Carnival, and its name is Breeze. Due to debut this June, Carnival Breeze will represent the most radical design departure ever for the line, which has been known for decades for its completely over-the-top, Vegas-meets-acid-trip decor. The new Breeze, on the other hand, has been designed with a light, Caribbean feel—all light colors, breezy layouts, open views, and friendly rum-and-tequila bars. And based on today’s news, that might very well be the model for the line going forward. Today, Carnival announced that the aforementioned Carnival Destiny will go into dry dock early next year for a $155 million renovation so massive and transformative that they feel compelled to rename the vessel Carnival Sunshine. www.frommers.com/community/blogs/blog.cfm/cruise-blog/carnivals-destiny-rebuilt-completely-new-ship
